Sunday Service - Community - Rev. Taylor Bacon

We find ourselves in the midst of a loneliness epidemic that threatens the very fabric of our souls. More than half of Americans say no one knows them well, and young adults are suffering most acutely from this isolation. Yet the author of Hebrews offers us a profound remedy: 'Let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together.' This isn't just about showing up on Sunday mornings—it's about reimagining what Christian community truly means. Drawing from both Jesus's model and John Wesley's early Methodist practices, we're challenged to embrace four levels of relationship: our intimates who know us deeply, our kin who do life alongside us, our village of wider support, and our tribe of loose connections. The most transformative practice? Finding those one to five trusted friends who will ask us the hardest questions, including 'Is there anything you desire to keep a secret?' This vulnerable space, where we confess and hear 'In the name of Jesus, you're forgiven,' is where real spiritual formation happens. Sunday worship is important, but it's the shallowest level of community we can experience. True discipleship occurs around tables, in small groups, and in those uncomfortable moments of radical honesty. The longest journey we'll ever take is from our head to our heart, and authentic community is the vehicle that makes that journey possible.
