Sunday Sermon - Hurry Down - Rev. James Williams

Dec 21, 2025    Rev. James Williams

In the midst of our hurried holiday preparations, we're invited to discover a profound truth: the Christmas story is fundamentally about slowing down. As we read through Luke 2, we encounter shepherds resting in fields, Joseph receiving messages in dreams, and angels appearing when minds were quiet and clear. This isn't coincidental—it's instructional. Throughout Scripture, God consistently speaks to people in moments of rest, not in frantic activity. Jesus himself modeled this beautifully, never rushing through crowds, always walking slowly, always present enough to notice a single woman touching his garment among hundreds. The message challenges our modern addiction to busyness and productivity, especially during a season that ironically celebrates the Prince of Peace while we exhaust ourselves with endless tasks. We're reminded that we cannot truly hear from God when we're in constant motion. This Advent season offers us a sacred opportunity to resist the cultural pressure to hurry and instead create space for contemplation. The greatest gift of Christmas isn't found in our accomplishments or preparations—it's found in simply being still enough to receive God's love and presence. As we approach Christmas Day, we're encouraged to carve out lonely places, quiet moments where we can say, 'Speak, Lord, your servant is listening.' The real miracle of Bethlehem isn't just that God came down to us, but that He invites us to slow down enough to truly encounter Him.
